In the history of Chinese painting, freehand bird and flower paintings of the Wu School, which existed in Suzhou in the Ming Dynasty, are distinctive and epoch-making. The freehand bird and flower paintings of Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Chen Chun, Lu Zhi, Zhou Zhimian, and other masters have shone throughout history and guided numerous generations. In modern times, from Lu Hui, Chen Mo, Zhang Xinjia, to Zhang Jixin, the Wu Painting School is still imbued with the same spirit, elegance and inspiration. Mr. Zhang Jixin, now 93 years old, followed Mr. Zhang Xinjia early in his life and learned the freehand bird and flower paintings. During his study, he was also immersed in the imitation of traditional paintings as well as the study of art theories and classical poetries. In the 1960s and 1970s, he made friends with Wu Hufan, Jiang Hanting, Zhang Dazhuang, Lu Yanshao, Liu Haisu, Shen Zicheng, and other famous painters, with whom he exchanged views and expertise, which greatly benefited him. At the end of the 1970s, Zhang served as the vice president of Suzhou Art & Design Technology Institute. Despite his busy administrative and teaching work, Zhang published more than 50 textbooks on flower and bird painting techniques. He wrote a large number of painting review articles and academic writings while being engaged in the creation of great paintings. Mr. Zhang’s freehand flower and bird paintings have showcased a distinctive personal style as early as the 1970s. After his retirement, he was devoted to the inheritance of Wu School freehand bird and flower paintings with new historical development, finally achieving fruitful results. His painting creation originated from his feelings and aesthetic considerations of the natural beauty of waterside villages in Suzhou. Based on sketching, he explored the way to match the imagery of objective objects with the truthfulness of life. In terms of painting techniques, he emphasizes the combination of the writing characteristics of brush lines and water, ink, and color so that they can unitedly express the imagery of objects. He has been creatively exploring and studying the patterns of “freehand paintings of bird and flower in the water towns of Jiangnan”. Zhang Jixin has blended sketching with freehand painting, bringing life to the flowers, birds, fish, and insects under his brush. His strokes are both powerful and delicate. His composition has a myriad of changes, which gives nature endless dynamics while expressing his appreciation and profound sentiments toward all creatures. His esthetic pursuit of the language of brushstrokes and artistic images reflects the positive and progressive spiritual dimension of the times. Mr. Zhang Jixin’s freehand bird and flower paintings feature era-leading painting techniques, which forms the overall characteristics and contemporary influence of his artistic creation. Therefore, his flower and bird paintings are well-known in Jiangsu and even the whole country. No doubt, he is the most extraordinary master of modern Wu School. May 2018
